New Director of Communications Hello Whitewater Ontario my name is Jill Mclellan I will be the new Director of Commmunications effective immediately for the 2018 season. I’m relatively new to the Whitewater world with only being in the sport 3 years; but in that time I have purchased a playboat, long boat , creek and squirt and plan on studying those disciplines as best I can. I have taken courses with the Madawaska Kanu Centre and the Ottawa Kayak School. Also in that time I was privileged enough to take MKC’s Slalom week and participated in their race day which opened my eyes to the extreme technicality of Slalom. My sports background is quite different from whitewater as I’ve been a Biathlon coach and Advanced official for the better of 10 years as well as a level 2 Gymnastics coach and Marksman coach which has taken me all over Canada. I can relate to training national level athletes and youth development, as I’ve taught 2 going up to the young age of 65. Being from Cape Breton Island we did not have whitewater on the island, but I did have waterfalls and the Atlantic as my playground. I’ve been around water my whole life living on an island with water being 15 mins in any direction. A military life brought me to the Ottawa valley in 2010 and it was not until 2015 when my spouse introduced me to Whitewater. His hope was to help with my PTSD pushing my limits to new levels. Whitewater has personally taught me more than words can describe and I’m so grateful. I’m a huge advocate for introducing people who have any disabilities to the sport as a outlet. The community is much like my military family and it’s something that other sports do not have and very much need . Being a woman in the sport is something I expected to be treated differently for; but your just included. I personally love being around a group of women because it’s soo empowering and truly a special moment. In my new roll I hope to bring us into the modern era, and use my east coast roots to bring our family closer. I love to celebrate achievements, and hold tight when times are rough. I’m very active and would love to receive messages and photos from people that I can share ; from stories, to achievements, to funny times. Ontario is quite large but no matter how far we are in distance let’s make this joy for one common thing be the bond that holds us together.
