September 17 - September 20
This is a non-KWP event. This is the largest paddling festival in North America with approximately 5000 people attending one way or another. Hosted by American Whitewater, the festival is a celebration of AW acquiring releases back in the 80’s. It takes place in Summersville, West Virginia, approximately 12 hours away. Location: Gauley River (other rivers include Yauk, Tygart, New, etc.) Dates vary depending on departure date.
The Gauley River is a large volume river Class 3 / 4 with some Class 5’s. There are 2 sections Upper and Lower. The festival consists of vendors, food, bands, music, beer, kayak and gear sales, parties, bon fires, etc, etc, etc. This is an amazing festival.
KWP members do make annual trips to this event, although not KWP planned trips, many will post trip details on the website, securing travel/paddling partners for the weekend. Take some extra time and paddle one or all of the following, New River Gorge Class 3+, Tygart Falls Class 3+, Lower Yuak Class 3, Upper Yuak Class 4 (an amazing, continuous boulder garden river). Release dates are scheduled for the Upper Yuak the week before Gauley fest. Well worth it if you can make both.
Ability: Intermediate to Expert (depending on Rivers and sections)
