Kawartha Whitewater Paddlers - Annual June Ottawa River TripIt’s that time of year again, the time of year when we shed our spring water paddling gear and head up to the Ottawa River for the summer. This is the 5th annual KWP June Ottawa trip. Over the years this trip has grown to become one of the larger and established KWP events. I hope that as many as possible KWPers can make to this year’s event as the water and weather look to be great.
Date: Saturday June 16th and Sunday June 17th.
River Info : Ottawa River is a large volume river, meaning there is a lot of water. Even though the rapids are large they are for the most part forgiving. Warm and deep the Ottawa River offers a great paddling experience for novice to expert paddlers. All KWPer’s are welcome to come and experience this whitewater river this weekend. Please have some whitewater paddling experience and basic knowledge of paddling in whitewater, having an eskimo roll would be an asset too. All new paddlers will be guided down the river. Rapids are easy to scout and walk if needed. If you have any questions on whether you think you should be coming this weekend please don’t hesitate to email me at
kwp@bell.net.
Location/Camping: The whitewater section of the Ottawa River is located north of Beachburg. Basically a 3 hour drive from Peterborough. KWP club stays at River Run (local rafting resort). River Run info and directions can be found at their website
www.riverrunrafting.com. When you check in tell them you are with KWP and we are staying on private site “Beach Tree Bluff” (below paddler camping) and have reserved for Friday and Saturday nights. Cost per person per night is $16.50 (incl Takeout). Added new this year for a total cost per night of $19.00 is breakfast if you want to do that option (*:00am ish is when it is served, Clivee you may still be up!). Everyone pays for themselves (nights, people, package, etc.) when they check in. River Run has fairly good amenities, showers, beach, sauna, spa, etc. check website for more info, but because of where we are camping there is a small walk to these things. For those that are arriving early Friday please leave space for KWPer’s coming with campers and trailers. Please leave open paths for vehicles to move around if needed and an area for the 20’x20 KWP tent.
Club Info: Paddlers will need to be KWP members (good time to join and pay if you haven’t already) or day club members (forms will be there for both). For KWP members that paid before the April 1st deadline my hope is to have the KWP stickers there that weekend for distribution. The KWP Board will be having a formal meeting with all KWP
Trip Leaders on Saturday morning to discuss not only the weekend’s roles and responsibilities but the ongoing duties of a KWP Trip Leader. For those that want to be a KWP Trip Leader we will get together Saturday morning and have info packages for you, forms to fill out if you have not already. For those Trip Leaders that don’t make it to the Ottawa Weekend we will email you the info. Also the KWP Board will be taking this opportunity to get together to discuss any issues (as we will all be present). If anyone has any club matters that they would like to be discussed please let me know prior to the weekend.
Other Info (Non-paddling and / or Club related):- Paddlers / Club members are encouraged to bring spouses and kids if they so desire. River run has a nice beach area and rafting as options. In the past we have had few people come up for the party and relaxation. If you or spouse are coming up and planning on not paddling post it, as you may entice others to do the same and it is a lot nicer to hang out during the day with more people.
- KWP’s annual Flip Cup Championship takes place on this weekend (although it has nothing to do with paddling or club activities). Last year’s winner was Kylie, who will it be this year?
- Currently looking into setting up some clinic time for the Saturday evening if there is enough interest. Please post if you would like to take a play boating clinic with a local pro (maybe Billy) most likely around 6:00pm on Saturday evening.
I am sure more info will be added as the weekend approaches. Feel free to post info, questions or comments concerning the weekend. Also I can be contacted through email at
kwp@bell.net or phone 705-877-2212 ext 285. See everyone on the river.
